Why Storm Water Management?
Internationally plastic pollution involving plastic bags, pellets, flakes, powder and microplastics is recognised as a major environmental hazard. International initiatives in the US (Operation Clean Sweep) and Europe (Interregs’s Preventing Plastic Pollution) are organising and coordinating efforts to minimise plastic pollution.
Ultratech in the US and Middle East with its Drainguard, and Fosse Liquitrol in Europe with its equivalent ‘Witches Hat’ drain guard are working with these international initiatives to provide best practice for storm watermanagement.

Operation Clean Sweep
Spilled pellets, flakes, and powder can make their ways can make their way into local waterways and ultimately estuaries and the ocean. This isn’t just an eyesore and a litter issue; pellets, flakes, and powder, if accidentally mistaken for food by birds or marine animals, could harm them. That’s why the industry is behind Zero Pellet, Flake, and Powder Loss—and it can only be achieved with your help.
The US Plastics Industry Association began an education effort twelve years ago to reduce plastic resin loss to the environment. A number of public service materials under the name of Operation Clean
Sweep (OCS) . were disseminated to companies throughout the country. The message was simple: Resin
should be contained, reclaimed and/or disposed of properly.
Preventing Plastic Pollution
In Europe working in partnership with 18 organisations from across France and England, Preventing Plastic Pollution seeks to understand and reduce the impacts of plastic pollution in the marine environment.
By looking at the catchment from source to sea, the project will identify and target hotspots for plastic, embed behaviour change in local communities and businesses, and implement effective solutions and alternatives.
The €14m Preventing Plastic Pollution project was approved by the Interreg France (Channel) England Programme, which has committed €9.9m in funding through the European Regional Development Fund. The project will work across seven pilot sites: Brest Harbour, Bay of Douarnenez, Bay of Veys, Poole Harbour, and the Medway, Tamar, and Great Ouse estuaries.
The information gathered from research in these areas will allow the cross-Channel partnerships to tackle some of the four million tonnes of plastic waste that enter the sea via rivers every year.
